Thirty First Bird Review is soliciting submission for our upcoming inaugural print issue. The theme for this submission period is "Creation." Authors and artists are encouraged to submit any and all literary works, be they original short stories, essays, selections of drama, selections from longer prose pieces, selections from graphic novels, journalism, memoir, poems, creative non-fiction, or some other form of speculative, literary experimentation. All pieces must in some sense engage the idea of "Creation," - in either/or the religious sense of the word, or some other. Submissions that are ultimately chosen will engage the theme in a unique and unexpected way. Please, no anti-evolution or creationist diatribes - we are interested in radical, interesting, and unusual explorations of the philosophical concept of creation - not fundamentalist bullshit.
We are also seeking submissions for our online journal, anything that critically or creatively deals with the concept of religion and literature is welcome. Submissions to the print journal will be read continuosly. Current work in the online issue will be archived once the print issue is released. Please let us know if you want your work to be considered for the print, web or both editions.
Poets are limited to 5 poems, with one poem per page; prose authors are limited to ten pages or less. Thirty First Bird Review will only accept submissions electronically, to thirtyfirstbird@yahoo.com. Please place all submissions in the body of your email, no attachments will be accepted, unless it is requested from the editor. Include a one paragraph biography with your submission. The reading period will run from June 1st to October 1st 2009. Simultaneous submissions are acceptable, if you are accepted somewhere else before we have responded, please inform us. The copyright remains the sole property of the author, though subsequent republication of one's work must indicate Thirty First Bird Review as the original publisher, and we may ask for the right to reprint some works in potential future anthologies. We are unable to pay selected authors at this time, though we are hoping to be able to supply at least one free copy (this depends on if we receive a grant or not). Queries and questions are welcome at the same email address.
